Friday Reads and Weekend Plans

It’s Friday! Wooooooo! AND because Monday is Presidents’ Day, I get a three-day weekend. AND all of my schoolwork is done for the week, so I can read for pleasure FOR THREE DAYS. I am so excited about this. Can you feel it? CAN YOU FEEL IT?

Currently reading:

Daytime book: How Long ’til Black Future Month?, by N.K. Jemisin.

In these stories, Jemisin sharply examines modern society, infusing magic into the mundane, and drawing deft parallels in the fantasy realms of her imagination. Dragons and hateful spirits haunt the flooded city of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In a parallel universe, a utopian society watches our world, trying to learn from our mistakes. A black mother in the Jim Crow south must figure out how to save her daughter from a fey offering impossible promises. And in the Hugo award-nominated short story โ€œThe City Born Great,โ€ a young street kid fights to give birth to an old metropolisโ€™s soul.

I started this last night and read the Introduction and the first story, and I already know I’m going to love it. And OMG THAT COVER. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Bedtime book: Lord of Chaos (Wheel of Time #6), by Robert Jordan

On the slopes of Shayol Ghul, the Myrddraal swords are forged, and the sky is not the sky of this world;

In Salidar the White Tower in exile prepares an embassy to Caemlyn, where Rand Al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn, holds the throne–and where an unexpected visitor may change the world….

In Emond’s Field, Perrin Goldeneyes, Lord of the Two Rivers, feels the pull of ta’veren to ta’veren and prepares to march….

Morgase of Caemlyn finds a most unexpected, and quite unwelcome, ally….And south lies Illian, where Sammael holds sway….

Because I’ve been reading the Wheel of Time series as my bedtime books, it is taking me a long time to get through them. They are all over 900 pages so far, and I get about 10 pages read per night before I start to fall asleep. And that’s not because the books aren’t good, it’s just because I’m exhausted by the time I get in bed. I’ve been enjoying the series very much.

Weekend reading plans:

I’ll probably finish How Long ’til Black Future Month? on Saturday afternoon. sj and I are reading this one together and we plan to read The Boy on the Bridge (M.R. Carey) together next, but I might finish BFM before she does. If that’s the case, I’ll need something to read in between. Because I have A WHOLE WEEKEND to read for myself, I checked a few books out from the library…

sj and I want to read Riot Baby (Tochi Onyebuchi) together, too, so I think I’m going to see if she wants to read that before we start The Boy on the Bridge. It’s super short (176 pages), so we can knock that out in no time. Weather (Jenny Offill) and The Vanished Birds (Simon Jimenez) are on my TBR list anyway. I also have Such a Fun Age (Kiley Reid) waiting for me on my Kobo. SO MANY BOOKS TO CHOOSE FROM. We’ll see how many books I can get through this weekend when I’m not napping (I try to take a 90-minute nap on my days off because naps are the best).

Watching:

I’ve mentioned before that my friend Will and I watch TV together on weekend nights. We’re all caught up on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, so we’ve started watching 30 Rock (he’s watched it before, I haven’t). It’s pretty good so far.

My husband and I are almost caught up on the current season of This Is Us, but I’m not sure what we’re going to binge next. I’m thinking either The Magicians (we need to start watching the current season) or V Wars. But I really want to start watching Rob McElhenney’s Mythic Quest, too. I allot the least amount of my time for TV and there are so many shows I still want to watch.

What are your plans for the weekend? Anything exciting? What are you currently reading and/or watching?

  1. We’re flying to St. Louis tonight and back on Sunday so we can see my mother-in-law on Saturday, and I had no idea that some people have Monday off. Now I will know to leave more time because of crowds!

    1. We always had Presidents’ Day off in school, but this is the first time I’ve been in a job that gives the federal holidays as paid holidays. It’s so nice. I worked retail for 13 years and holidays always meant I was working.

  2. Weekend plans… Taking the dog out for a few long walks while I listen to podcasts. Watching YouTube reviews that lovingly mock the Mary-Kate & Ashley videos. Maybe having brunch with my parents on Sunday.

30 Rock is delightful. I could drop so many quotes here, but I donโ€™t want to spoil anything for you ๐Ÿ˜…

  3. I’m totally responding to this like it’s from now and not a week ago (I was busy on vacation :-D). I can’t wait to hear about the Wheel of Time, I followed someone who read it but I couldn’t quite decide if I wanted to do it. I’m about 1/4 of the way through The Dark Tower, holy shit it starts with a bang! I’m hoping to finish it by mid-week next week.

    1. Wooooo! Almost finished! I will refrain from saying ALL THE THINGS.

I am thoroughly enjoying the WoT series. I’m fine with just reading a few pages every day. They say if you can make it through the first three, and you still want to go on, you’re over the hump. But that is A LOT OF PAGES to read before you decide. Heh. I was totally on board for reading more after the third book.
